SAFE MODE Saved my PS3 from the Green Line of Death (Green light of nothing)

12 replies 8757 views Edited Jul 22, 2010

Here is my story.

My PS3 worked find up to about 3 weeks ago... I think a new update came out and I updated the PS3. It worked fine after the reboot until I shut it down. The following day I was looking forward to a few hours of COD MW2 of the PS3... But when I turned it on there was no picture No sound nothing... I checked the HDMI and tried a new cable to be sure... still the same. I tried to reboot it and it just kept beeping at me. I pulled the plug and did a hard reset and reset the video settings... still the same. At this stage I was getting worried. I took out the HDD and tried booting it. Ah Same. I put my hard drive into another PS3 and it worked fine. I even formatted the drive to see if that would make a difference. No!

***Just a side note. Your PS3 Will boot with no hard drive! It will tell you cannot find drive. ***

Now I was starting to think that the BIOS was erased during the firmware update! Of that the mother board was wrecked!

I spent 3 weeks looking for the problem and trying to find a fix. 3 F**king weeks! And I came up with nothing! Until I found this!

I went into safe mode and tried the Restore PS3 System and then rebooted. This still didn’t fix the problem. But I then went about downloading the latest firmware update for the PS3 on to a Sony Memory stick (from my PSP) via my laptop. The folder structure must be: PS3>UPDATE>PS3UPDAT.PUP

  • Location: Save in the “PS3” folder > “UPDATE” folder
  • File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”.

***Note: Do not use an External HDD as I tried this and nothing happened! But try a normal USB flash drive that might work***

I put the memory stick and used the Safe mode Option: System Update. The PS3 then started scanning the memory stick for the update. This took 5 Minutes or so. I and then started updating. I followed the usual update crap going next and accepting the license etc. And then it stated updating. I was now on my knees praying that this would work.

After about 15 mins of updating it rebooted... I was still praying!

OH MY GOD! IT WORKED!!!

I needed to set up my PS3 from the start again set up my account and PSN account etc. But I didnt care! It worked! I couldnt believe it!

I would recommend this to any one with the Green Line of death or Green light of nothing.

Thank you for this safe mode! You saved me a alot of money!

SAFE MODE INSTRUCTIONS:

We do not recommend using the options in Safe Mode unless you are experiencing issues with the PLAYSTATION 3.  Some of these options could result in loss of data.

If you choose to perform one of the Safe Mode options, please back up your data before attempting to enter safe mode (when possible).

Safe Mode is only available to PS3's with system software 2.60 or greater installed.

 When to Use Safe Mode

Execute safe mode when the PS3™ is experiencing the following symptoms:

  • When the PS3™ system is started up, the XMB™ menu is not displayed (only the wave screen background appears)
  • When the PS3™ system is started up, nothing appears on the screen
  • When the PS3™ system is started up, a message stating is displayed > > Restore operation > Restart
Original message is displayed again or the system stops during restoration.
  • When the PS3™ system is started up, a message stating is displayed > > Rebuild > Failure > System stops while formatting hard disk drive.
  • The system stops while restarting after a PS3™ system update or while updating or rebuilding the database. The situation does not improve even when the system is restarted.

Safe Mode Options

In Safe Mode, you will have the following options:

  1. Restart System - Ends safe mode and starts up the PLAYSTATION 3 normally.
  2. Restore Default Settings - Performs the same operations as on the XMB™, and also deletes PlayStation®Network account information from the system.
  3. Restore File System - Attempts to repair all areas on the hard disk drive where files can be saved. Corrupted data may be erased if it cannot be recovered.
  4. Rebuild Database - Deletes messages, playlists, changes made on screens, trimming information for pictures in , video thumbnails, video playback history and video resume information.
This operation may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items.
  5. Restore PS3 System - IMPORTANT: All data will be lost by performing this step.
This will reformat the hard drive on the PLAYSTATION 3, deleting all data and restoring it to as if it just came out of the box. This is the same as on the XMB.
  6. System Update - Updates the PS3 system software. This can only be done with an update file already saved on an external storage media.

Activating Safe Mode

Step 1: Turn off the PLAYSTATION 3 by holding the Power button on the front of the unit till the Power light is red.

Step 2:

  1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, meaning the PLAYSTATION 3 is powering on.
  2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep, indicating the video reset.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a third beep and the system will power off (Power light is red).

Step 3:

  1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, again for the PLAYSTATION 3 to power on.
  2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep for video reset.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep.  At that point release the Power button.  If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button."

  1. Connect a USB cable to the controller and the PLAYSTATION 3 and press the PS button to enter Safe Mode.
  2. Then you will see the Safe Mode menu.

Step 4: We recommending performing the safe mode options in the following order until one of the options works for you. If one of the options work, do not continue onto the other options.

  1. Restore Default Settings
  2. Restore File System
  3. Rebuild Database
  4. Restore PS3 System

Congrats. Would've been a b**** to fork out another $300+ for another PS3. I wonder if that method would've fixed my first one.

Basically, the moment I first hooked it up (Brand new 80gb I bought the same day) it turned on, stayed with a green light as if it was working, but no video at all. I also had that same double beeping when I tried rebooting.

Yeah sounds like the same as mine. I only done this because my warranty had expired by about 1.5 years ago.

If I was in your shoes I would demand a new PS3 right away! And then a Voucher to keep me quite as I would try by best to have everyone boycott the store! ha ha but that's cos Im a touch crazy!

Re: SAFE MODE Saved my PS3 from the Green Line of Death (Green light of nothing)

I have this same issue on my 60gb launch. Tried shimming, replacing the harddrive, removing the hdd, did all the buttons pressing and on/off switch, etc, in so many friggin variations it's made my head spin. I cannot for the life of me get this things to boot! Tried HDMI, Composite, RCA, S-Video, nada. 360gb HDD, original 60gb HDD, nothing. Broke it all the way down, did full DEEP CLEANING, fresh thermal paste, nothing. New Motherboard battery,(had to try!) nothing. Power is not an issue either.

All it does it start, green light on, no video or sound, controller will not connect, but will blink either rapidly or slow when plugged into USB. I've also tried the coin shimming trick of placing coins (5 true copper pennies with thermal paste on each side) and still nothing.

I am so lost, and don't want to give up! I have in the meantime purchased a PS3 Slim, and left my Fat PS3 as a project, that I've been going back to a couple times a week. I have a lot of SaveGames that I want to get off the drive for games that I have played through, unlocked certain things, or those that I haven't beaten yet to finish. But I'd still like to hold on to it, and use it as a second system for either my kids, or my wife and I to play seperately. Not to mention the backwards compatibility and Media Card ports are nice to have.

I know a lot of flamers are saying that people are just whining about the FW 4.00 causing it, and instead their system just finally broke down. There were news reports of several launch system freezing with the FW 4.00, but then it died down. Well, mine started immediately after the update. I won't say it actually WAS the firmware, but what a crazy coincidence!! Froze like crazy! Then finally, 2 months later, 4.10/4.11 came out, loaded it onto a USB drive, loaded, finished, rebooted, played a game for roughly a couple hours (thought they had released a fix in the update! It was great!) but then it froze again, so I rebooted, but never got video/sound again. All the permiations of video restting, safe mode, video cable changeouts, etc, NOTHING has worked.

I am VERY hesitant to do the reflow, as I have heard of very few others having the issue resolved, but more didn't resolve the issue at all, or it fried the board.

So if anyone can shine some more light on this issue, those who've resolved it give their miracle fix to us, would be much appreciated!!
