Well, I'd really appreciate, if I could play my PS2 library of games finished on the PS3. My PS2 just died, sometime ago, and I still have some unfinished games. For those concerned with this, come here http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=152180619343
That group it;s trying to make understand SCEA, why backward compatibility it's not such a trivial matter...
Have you considered swapping for one of the launch PS3s? It might be easier to get your backwards compatibility that way. Used PS2s are dirt cheap too.
Since you are already used to playing PS2 games on your PS2, just get another one. If you don't want to buy another new one, there are plenty of cheap ones available at places like GameStop.
Since Sony has already taken the PS2 BC feature out of the PS3, they are not going back. Instead they are selling remastered and digital versions of these games. The advantage of this is that it will run on all PS3 models, and the digital version should run on future PS hardware.
That's because Sony is ****** stupid, think about it, if it had backwards compacitlity you could use your ps3 as a ps2. And if you broke your PS2 you have a PS3 slim to use. Oh yeah, I forgot Sony is selfish all they want is $$$. Just as bad as Square Soft... But Sony went wrong with the PS3. I had a 20gb model, broke got a slim and now I want to repair my 20gb bluray drive JUST to use it as a PS2. There PS2 Classics... Horrible selections like WHERE IN THE HELL is Kingdom Hearts series, or a GTA games? Nobody gives a god **** **** about Tak. Who the hell are picking the games a 10 year old. I never even PLAYED any of the games on the PS2 classics...

I don't understand the bit about breaking your PS2 and having a PS3 Slim to use.
If it's just the Blu-ray drive toast, then you can easily flog it on Craigslist or eBay for a good sum of money and buy a used PS2 instead. That way someone else could use it as a PS3 and a PS2 once they fix the Blu-ray drive.
It has an internal PS2 Memory Card feature for downloadable PS2 games off of PSN. So if anybody else doesn't even know what the hell they are talking about they shouldn't even say anything. Sorry for the language but its true. There is the right and truthful answer.
