Well, I did this according to gilksy's youtube vids and it worked like a charm.  Man that blue light coming on and the sound of the symphony was beautiful!

Of course, I quickly copied all my game saves first thing, just in case.  It's been running fine for two hours now.  I don't even hear the fan it's so quiet.

Thanks again gilksy!

Did you remove the fan from the heat sink and fins?  How much dust did you have in there?

Yes.  There was a thin layer of dust on the blades of the fan and a few small dust balls on the motherboard.  Overall, not as bad as I was expecting.  She's sparkling clean inside and out now.

Re: YLOD REPAIR GUIDE (NEW)

I've done this and it works great!

However, there was this one 40GB system that would work, but the fan wouldn't even go beyond stage 2 or even be audible no matter what I would do to it.

I fear that it would repeat the problem and it has! The heatsink contains so much heat, but the fan isn't pulling all the hot air out.

I did perform a fan test and the fan can work, but it doesn't work when in normal and heavy use.

Should I just replace the fan with whatever I find on eBay?

The general concensus is that near 90% of the time it's the issue on the motherboard and 10% power supply.  Gilksy mentions this in his first video.  Go to youtube and type gilksy and the videos will come right up.  Good luck!

Cheers!

I used denatured alcohol, he used isopropyl alcohol, essentially the same.  Home depot or lowes, just ask.

To scrape the old stuff off you can use an old plastic card, we used an old itunes card.  Try one of those supermarket club member cards or something of the like.

The heat compound i got from radio shack, not artic silver but very similar silver name.  They'll ask what your using it for and they'll recommend that if they are savy enough.
