Home is Alive and Well

Jan 29, 2014

Several things today gave me this feeling. First I noticed that at 11:30 am est, every Home challenge space was packed. When I tried to bowl, the que was 15. At this time of day on a Wed, kids would be in school. So these numbers are significant.

Next, I found that Cutthroats was at last fixed.

Then, I noticed that the Echochrome machines were back in the bowling alley.

We are still getting new Home content Developers, and current Developers are not totally dependent on Home, but are or have diversified.

After exploring my PS4, I also realized how limited it is. I believe the direction away from a multimedia center is a huge mistake. I can not see xmb msg attachments, none of my PSN avatars or themes are usable, there is no picture viewer, and more.

I am more convinced than ever, that not only Home, but our PS3s will remain popular and supported for a long time to come.

There are things about PS4 that that I knew were going to take a long time to get. HD-PVR is a no go, Video uploads to HD a no go. You can't share your gamely to YouTube yet, No  MP3s or audio CDs yet, Wireless headsets? Dynamic themes yet? Video chat? Not sure but you definitely can not use Home there.. Yet?

I have a PS3 and it does all of that still. Eventually I will get a PS4 but for now Home, and all the rest looks great on my PS3.

I believe " We will see" is an honest answer. The Home Challenges are an attempt to bring in new users and bring back old users. We have had a barrage of new and interesting content and Developers. If Home does not grow, the fate of Home, with or without the PS4, seems obvious. The future of Home depends on us, the users. If we want Home to survive, we need to use it, support it, and promote it to our friends.

There is a few problems with that option.

  1. It would answer why Sony does not know "if" Home will be on the PS4 or not but it would not answer "why" Home is not on the PS4. Lets not forget the PS4 is already out and if Sony wanted to put Home out on the PS4 on day one there would have had to do some pre-planning.
  2. If it is "we will see" then that also says there are no plans right now to put Home on the PS4.  This is not just something that will happen over night Sony needs to make Home so it will work on another OS and that takes a lot of programming.
  3. Home was made to be supported by advertisers, third party developers and us the users of Home buying stuff.  None of the above are doing good right now.  So even if Home does grow and more people come it does not mean that more people are going to buy or invest in Home.  It is not as simple as you put it.

:^/ Not sure I understand how the existence of the PS4 would somehow necessitate removing Home from PSN. Care to elaborate?

And anyway, there's already a monster thread about Home on PS4. This should have gone there....

It will.

The way you play the game is the way you live your life.

:^/ The most recent revelation is that there is no word at this time. I translate that as Sony still weighing their options on the matter, and nothing being concrete right now.

That is, it's neither a yes nor a no.

Home is not going to go anywhere any day soon.  The question at hand is if Home will make it to the PS4 right now it looks very unlikely but that will not do much to Home on the PS3.
