But what does your work around do anyway?  Does it open my computer up to the internets or something?

No.  All this does it to replace your ISP's provided DNS servers with an alternative.

Now on the other hand, if you go ahead and start opening up or forwarding ports without knowing what you're doing, then you run the real possibility of creating vulnerabilities in your network.  That's why I said you shouldn't change anything on your router.  Just change the DNS addresses in your PS3.  Simple as that.

Open DNS Project?  Does that mean everyone can come in and use that server?  Is this an experiment of some sort?

OpenDNS is a free-to-use DNS server.  There are many others out there like it, but OpenDNS has a good reputation for security and reliability.  You could also use DNS servers from other ISP's if you care to do so; you'll just have to find those addresses yourself.

OP, you are a gentleman and a scholar.  Thank you!  This sh*t has been driving me nuts.  And I thought something was going kooky with my router.  I regret the million times I power cycled it now.

Seems that your PS3 isn't getting an IP address from your source (i.e. router or PC).  Are you sure you're getting an IP address?  Check network settings page and report back.
