I was actually surprised to find out that you couldn't swim in the game. I was like what the flip. How can you make a game about the wilderness without the ability to swim? I hope they make an add-on were you can swim. Then you can go fight pirates, and find some REAL treasure.

It does seem lame that a hero with Marston's talents will die if he ever gets his foot wet. It is designed this way because lake and rivers are used as barriers for the game map's borders and for areas that the player cannot enter until they have advanced to a certain point in the game. Like with the Great Plains area, you can't go there until you're pretty far in the story. But if you could swim, you could cross the river and get there as soon as you start playing.
At some point in the story, John Marston explains that he cannot swim. I remember it passing in the dialog.
I hope that comment about swimming to pirate-inhabited areas was a joke.

I was surprised that treasure only consisted of 1 block of gold. I thought I was going to find, jewelry, diamond swords, etc.. XD

True, but in SanAndreas. You did have the ability to swim but if you ever went out of bounds, you would atomatically get a 5 star wanting. //_-

You can swim in Chinatown wars.
I think in the end the game would feel akward if you could swim.

Yeah I learned the hard way as well.

Why can't we swim? Because most people in multiplayer would sit underwater with a blow tube, waiting for unsuspecting
gamers to ride by, and then shoot them from the back. You would turn around looking for the attacker saying, "who the...?"
Then die...lulz...
Oh BTW, don't ask me how their gun would stay dry underwater...I just give out problems, not solutions...lol...
