Try the Disgaea series. 1 and 2 are for the PSP or PS2, 3 is for PS3. It is anime style, but I highly recommend  it. It has good story, is funny, weird, lots of tactics are involved, and leveling up is sort of FF style.

I would recommend Fallout 3 if you like post apocalyptic games its really a great game if you get the GOTY edition that includes the DLC. Lots of trophies and tons of hours leveling up your character plus lots of missions.

Borderlands is awesome I never did beat it but playing it is just awesome it has online play with friends as well as a dual arena mode to challenge friends. Its an RPG/FPS that plays like Call of Duty controls.

i would suggest pokemon platinum... sounds like youve been out of the loop for a while it might be good for you to get back and play that.... lol,

but seriously FF13 is japanese but you could never really tell, great story, plenty long enough....graphics are rediculously good...strategy isnt big early on but once u get to chapter 10 it goes to super tactics if you wanna survive lol...there is a lo of character progression, as far as upgradeing techniques and abilities...that would be my suggestion to you....although Fallout is good as is dragon age

I would recommend Nier.  It has a very good story and good replay value.

I second this. And you might want to look into the Front Mission games, they're war-based stratagy rpgs. I also own Fallout 3 and Elder Scrolls IV and they're both great.
