Bungie has confirmed on their blog the release date of Destiny, coming to current and past generation consoles September 9, 2014!  They also mentioned that the Destiny Beta will start in the summer of 2014, which will come first PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, as announced on Sony’s All Access PS4 Launch Event last month.

How does joining a public event work?

Bungie’s Community Manager DeeJ: To join a public event, all you have to do is get within range, and open fire. No lobbies. No loading screens. The frontier is open, and filled with encounters you can join, or skip right past, on your way to something you’ve deemed momentarily more important.

Bungie has confirmed that a beta test of its forthcoming space opera will start in early 2014 on PS3 and PS4 – it's open to those who preorder the game at participating outlets:

The beta will include a "diverse sampling of major activities" from the full game, though these were not specified. To gain entry into the Destiny beta, players can visit Bungie.net and follow the instructions.

Bungie's title Destiny puts players in the role of a Guardian empowered by The Traveler. Guardians are basically knights or protectors that seek to uncover the downfall of humanity and keep what's left safe. Destiny takes place in the future. There's interstellar travel, we've made it to different planets. But unfortunately, something catastrophic happened and us humans are now extinct.

"We wanted to build a world where any story is possible . Stories that matter, stories that endure and earn a big audience, told by us. The legends of Destiny won’t be told by us, they’ll be told by the players. These will be personal legends built from shared adventures, where the hero is you."

Destiny will be a sci-fi shooter where players will get to explore the solar system. As Guardians, players will fight alien species like Sandeaters, War Rhinos and Spider Pirates. Other enemies include time-travelling robots and space zombies. The game is expected to have drop-in co-op and will also have a slight magical element to it.

The company has confirmed that the game will be out on the PlayStation 3.

It is set to be what the company calls a “shared-world shooter”, which means that it will have a persistent world, much like you have in MMOs. The game will require an active Internet connection to play, even if you’re just playing single player. This would be the first time that a game requires players to be online even for single player on consoles.

The players will develop and grow their own characters, while affecting the worlds of other players. "Even in story mode, you will encounter other players on their own adventures, inhabiting and affecting the same world," said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.

"We're really putting players at the center of the world and giving them control of their experience," says Jason Jones, Bungie co-founder and Destiny project director. "From the ground up, we've built this game to be social and cooperative. We've learned a bunch of lessons from MMOs and Facebook games … but Destiny is a console shooter."

Destiny’s multiplayer modes, both competitive and cooperative, are designed to be seamlessly merged with its single-player experience. Players will come together and adventure together naturally, Bungie promises, without visible matchmaking. They’ll pair up in the City’s Overwatch district, form bonds, visit distant worlds. At times, they’ll cross paths with strangers, their separate adventures overlapping to become one.

Once you're out on those missions, you might team up with a bunch of other players you run into out of the blue. One of the missions Bungie described was a raid on a "Cabal exclusion zone" on Mars, an intimidating red fortress manned by hulking alien beasts called War Rhinos. If successful, your raid will net you not only a valuable piece of ancient machine intelligence to help humanity's dire cause, but also some rare loot to pocket for yourself. This includes new armor and equipment that changes both your appearance and attributes, as well as rare weapons. In typical Bungie fashion, these rare weapons bear names ranging from the serious, like The Fate of All Fools, to the silly, like Super Good Advice.

When you enter one of the game's public spaces, "the game is matchmaking you with other players, just like in other games, but it happens all the time, seamlessly and totally invisibly. There's no UI, there's no loading screens, there's nothing to take you out of the experience." Basically, you're walking around, doing your thing, and then suddenly someone else is there, doing their thing. Maybe it's the same thing as you, maybe they want to team up, maybe they're just passing through.

The developer has signed a 10-year deal with Activision to bring the world of Destiny to life, and they’ve spent a reported six years rebuilding their toolset and creating the new engine that will drive the game. They are using the world-building tool called “Grognok”.

The game contains at least 3 classes: Hunter, Warlock, Titan.

Activision sent out a press release Monday that confirmed a release window for the game as well as the console platforms it will release on. The current-gen PS3 is assured along with the PS4. The game isn't expected to release until after the PS4 is available. There is no information right now about how/if the PS3 game would interact with the PS4 version.
