I've played and currently own all the Silent Hill games on Sony's consoles and consider myself a fan of the Silent Hill series. Personally my favorite is Silent Hill 2. Though the original SH is also excellent and I enjoyed SH3. Silent Hill 4 was a bit disappointing for reasons I won't get into here. All that said, SH Homecoming is kind of a mixed bag.
First, if you didn't know SH Homecoming was developed by a western studio - Double Helix. The tone of Homecoming is a bit different even though the basic elements are all undoubtably Silent Hill. Maybe because of the new developer there is a new focus on fighting and the amount of enemies has been ratcheted up as well. Personally, I found this to be the games biggst shortfall. You're supposed to use the new combat engine to dodge and attack enemies. I found it extremely frustrating at times to dodge. Couple that with some camera issues and tight corridors and you can see why. One huge, glaring issue is that you can't invert the camera controls or character controls in the options. I always do this in my games and probably made things more difficult for me.
That said the story is genuinely good even with the more cut and dry approach from Double Helix. There are genuinely terrifying parts to this game and the introduction starts things off right away. The graphics are obviously the best in the series to date and the music is amazing.
Honestly if you're even curious about this game, get it. At the prices this game sells for it's worth your while.

I havent played a Silent Hill game since SH2. I know I could just go read a review but I would much rather hear it from the PS forum guys.
So does this mean you don’t want to read my review for Silent Hill: Homecoming?
SweetPoison13's Silent Hill: Homecoming Review
Silent Hill: Homecoming cannot hold a candle to Silent Hill 2 (if that is what you wanted to know). The gameplay in Silent Hill: Homecoming certainly isn’t for everyone but this is a very affordable video game at the moment so why not give it a try? If you are a fan of the Silent Hill series then you should be able to find something to appreciate in Silent Hill: Homecoming (just don’t expect to see anything like Silent Hill 2 walking into it).

Actually, your review is the kind of review I was hoping to find. Thanks bro

Silent Hill Homecoming was a subpar game for the series. I won't go much into details but to me it was my least favorite from the series. I thought there were things that were pleasant but there was things that seem to repeat over and over again throughout the game. The game took from the movie which I thought it lost its originality. I still like the game but it didn't have the same atmosphere that Silent Hill 1-4 had on me. It is still a good game to get if you are a fan of the series but I think it could have been better.

Personally I recommend you rent it first. It is my least favorite Silent Hill game and the only Silent Hill game I do not own because that is how disappointed I was of it. The gameplay was decent but what took it away from me was the focus on combat. Combat is not a bad choice but Silent Hill was never known for its combat. The psychological feel is absent from this game and while the enemies are much more disturbing and creepier than most of Downpour's enemies they lack the feel much of the enemies from Silent Hill 1 to Origins had.
You barely spend much time in Silent Hill itself and when you do reach the town itself you wish to spend more time in it but it is cut short. It is not the worst game ever made but by far it could have been so much better. The focus on action and combat killed any sense of dread and fear the game could have had and probably made the game feel much more creepy. The dark areas did not feel that creepy since the game was naturally bright on its own.
And towards the end of the game some unnecessary inclusion is place but I will not spoil it for you. You need to try it out yourself. The story was also weak. I figured out the twist by the middle of the game because most of the clues give it away. They are not giving away easily but if you put much attention to it you could probably figure it out yourself.
While it is one of the weakest titles of the series it does feel like it had a lot of potential. I want to like it I really do. But a lot of the problems, relating most to combat and feel, deter me away. I still recommend for people to try it out because it is still a game that can be enjoyable. So hey you might like it. Even though I did not enjoy it and personally never want to play it again, I know some people that do like it.

I think OP probably rented or bought it already in the 8 months since he posted . But I do agree with you mostly. It was also my least favorite. The combat was kind of hard to learn but once you did it was too easy and repetitive. The new game, Downpour, I think works better, but it is also very repetitive combat with all the blocking.

Haha, silly me. I did not pay attention to the date. I wa sso caught up with helping a fellow fan I ignored everything else. Personally I love Downpur. It is not my favorite by far but it certainly is a good game and the story has me interested. I haven't finished it yet because i am trying not to rush through it. Plus I am loving the exploration aspect of the game which makes the game much more fun and more intense as I move further into the town.
Downpour might just end up becoming my new favorite Silent Hill once I finish it. And you know for a fact I will replay it. It would have been awesome if they have ported it to the Vita as well and do a cross-over between both the PS3 and the Vita. Ah wel.. Am loving it. Homecoming is the one I just want to forget.
