MLB 2012 Season General Discussion Thread

61 replies 366 views Edited Apr 7, 2012

Well, the season proper technically kicked off in Japan a while back, but a whole slew of games went down tonight.

Woo, baseball.

-----------

Giants went down 4-5 to the out-of-nowhere Diamondbacks who came along and barely took the division last year as many of the important Giants went down with injuries last year. Good game, despite Lincecum getting tagged for 3 in the first off two homeruns, and then giving up the 3-3 tie later. Still struck out 7 but gave up some big hits. Sure he'll get that worked out.

Giants drove in 1 in the 9th and went out with RISP (they left quite a few men on throughout the day). Still, always surprising to see them hit at all. 11 total. And 4 runs isn't bad considering last year they gave Linceum, on average, like 2.3 runs per game, hah. A Posey error also hurt (bases loaded and one out instead of men on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs) Lincecum... but nice to see him back out on the field, and hitting!

Oh, and so glad Giants signed Matt Cain to a 5 year deal. My favorite player.

Jays have come out of the gate pretty good. The pen has been solid having a 1.20 ERA in the first 2 games, only allowing 2 runs in 15 innings of work and both coming in today's game (11 shutout innings last game in the marathon 16-inning win). Morrow brought his A-game. One bad pitch and it was unearned, anyways.

Jays could compete this year if injuries don't derail their season, their pen holds, and their players play to their potential (Morrow, Lawrie, Rasmus, JPA, Alvarez, and Thames specifically need to have good years to combine with Romero and Boss).

Giants lose 4-5 again! Again the result of the starter (Bumgarner) getting tagged early on two two run HRs. Used to losing close games, but it's usually 1-0, 2-1, not 5-4, hah. Pen gave up 1 in 4 IP with Otero making his MLB debut (giving up the 1, in two otherwise good innings of work). Sandoval is on point, including a 2 run HR, and Brett Pill came in and pinch hit for his first AB of the season and nailed a 2 run HR (his first major league at bat, midway through last season, was a HR as well). Need to see Schierholtz in RF.

Also, unrelated, but "unwritten rules" in baseball are some of the stupidest things and baseball players are such whiners sometimes.

My Reviews:

You mean like how the Giants were whining about Jimmy Rollins stealing with the Phillies up 5 and then hit Shane Victorino on purpose and hurting Placido Polanco last year?

You still mad, bro?

Giants lost 6-7 today. Cain, like the first two, gave up 5 on 2 HRs. It's like we're in bizarro world. Of course, Giants were winning 5-6 at the time, so the loss is on the pen this time around. Early goings suggest Pill needs to replace belt at first and Schierholtz needs to take his proper spot in the outfield in Huff's stead.

And I don't even know about the middle infield yet. Crawford only has short on lock for defense thus far...yet he had an error today! (And another on Posey, unfortunately.)  Maybe when Freddy Sanchez finally gets back from being hurt he'll go back to second and hit like he was hitting the last two years.

Posey and Sandoval look great, at least! Both hitting a lot and hitting jacks.

Giants home opener, a 5-0 win over the Pirates.

Matt Cain. 9 IP. 11K. 0BB. 0 ER. 1 H.

Yup, one hit shy of perfect. Gave it up to the opposing pitcher, too!

Oh, and anyone catch Barry Zito's complete game shutout against the Rockies? One of only a handful of lefties to record a shut out at Coors. So out of nowhere. Of course, Zito has had some good stretches the last two years but has always broken down by season's end, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Matt Cain pitched against Cliff Lee in the rubber match against Philly.

Followed up his stunning complete game 1 hitter (stats in the above post) with 9 IP, 0 ER, 2 H. Unfortunately didn't get the win because Cliff Lee was dealing himself. Lee gave up 7 hits and the Giants had a few really good chances to score (like in the beginning of the game with runners on the corners and no outs), but he pitched himself out of those spots really well by striking out 7 and goaded Giants hitters into four double plays.

Went to 11 innings and the pen let Cliff Lee down, Giants took it 1-0. Great series overall, from both sides. Lincecum pitched the losing game and again got tagged early for 4 or 5 runs (and good luck getting those back against Halladay), but then pitched the next 5 or 6 innings without giving up a run, so it looks like he's getting a grip on things, while Bumgarner (just locked up for the next 5 years!) and Cain continue to deal.

The Phillies offense is is pretty much a AA team these days.... Cliff Lee might have been the best hitter in the lineup last night.

Amazing pitching and a total lack of hitting? Welcome to being a Giants fan over the last seven+ years.

Though the offense looks surprisingly competent over the first 10 games of this season. Hope that carries on.

Phillip "Humber Games" Humber just threw a perfect game. He may have gotten a favorable call on the last out but I think the ump didn't want to be this year's Jim Joyce
