In theory, Starhawk's "SkillScores" should "ensure" that whether Official server list, or MM, the unskilled won't be facing the skilled (unless by choice). I still dislike perks because whether I win or lose, I want to know it was due to skill (that I may need to develop), rather than because the other guy may have chosen different perks than me.

Is Warhawk out of date? No, it's the HawkJunkie's training ground for Starhawk! Pwn Starhawk newbies from day 1!
The Newer player or unskilled player part, reminds me alot like Halo 3s ranking system since its based off skill so you won't be able to play the Pros which in a way would'nt be so bad. but the Perk system will bother me, but i guess i will have to deal with it when the game comes out.

If they(Lightbox) make the perks team oriented and available from the start, or unlocked through a series of challenges(prove you need it to get it) then I think perks will be ok.

True i am just hoping this game won't be Dumb down too much, its one of the reasons i liked warhawk because it was compeitive and no perks etc.

The announcement of the perk systems raised alarms with me also.
I hate it when people get better "stuff" just because they are capable of sinking more time into a game.
Improved skins, better looking armour, cool decals and whatnot that shows off your level, that's fine. But, giving better equipment and skills to people who play more is a real fast way to unbalance a game.

Hey guys! I just wanted to let you know that all of your concerns have been brought to Lightbox's attention, and the developers are working very hard to give you guys a balanced Starhawk experience that will best serve all players and be really awesome. We keep track of threads like this whenever we work on fleshing out the multiplayer design.
Thanks for your suggestions! Please keep conversations like this coming because we are listening.
Glad to hear that you guys are reading the forum, and even if you are listening but not acting, its good you came here to write this.
Not sure if it is possible, but the ultimate solution to this would be to offer both MM and server lists for ranked/unranked rooms. That way people have a choice, so if one fails to find them a room, they can just try the other. It's 100% win-win for everybody that way. Think of it as the perfect fail-safe system that meets everybody's expectations.
As for the skill/perk system, why not make them pickups that are scattered around the maps? Because a perk/skill system based on what rank or how many points you have is the best way to unbalance a game. Mix that with matchmaking and it will be a complete disaster.
Best thing for you guys to do is stick with the core Warhawk formula and simply build upon that, don't go and change everything like GG did with KZ3. Incentives for rank-up should be something other than game-changing abilities/weapons. Sure I will admit ranking up to gain a new ability is a pretty good motivator, but lets face it, the novelty wears off very quickly and in the end what matters most is balance, fun and long-term playability.
Warhawk was a pure arcade style game, old school weapon pickups FTW! Don't get rid of that and don't add a rank-achievable perk/skill system, because it will just soil the quality of the game.

They are allowing server lists & MM for Official ranked.
We don't know if PR rooms will even be allowed to exist
I don't know what they're doing for unranked...probably both MM & server list, because there's less controversy there. If a newbie wants to get pwned in an unranked server list, it's not the same kind of issue as newbies getting pwned in ranked Officials.

I agree with everything you're saying about perks (as do many others). No other shooter has had the long-lasting appeal of WH, don't mess that up.

It has been along time since I posted here in the PS forums
.. I can tell you that this thread is one that intrigued me greatly
"Match Making" in Starhawk could very well turn out to be a bad thing
but on the flip side .. I haven't really seen much talk about how it will work
.. Lightbox Interactive has gone to great lengths coupled with Sony to keep this game under
wraps for along time.. and they are releasing info in a very very specific way .. or so it seems
We know there will be a ranking system .. and for that to work .. Ranked games will have to exist
Match making if done .. lets say in conjunction with other criteria .. . or .. maybe
done in a way that .. . Hmmmm . . . gives you a grater idea of what you getting into
.. or better yet . .. IS NOT QUICK JOIN . .. could turn out to be
an invaluable asset in Starhawk
In Warhawk
how many times have you jumped into an Offical server and found yourself in the back of a Jeep
that some Player didn't know how to drive . . or the passenger "Hostige" in a Hawk flying into mountains
and stuff .. (Sorry about that Sonic42) ..
The Heavy Point is - Lightbox is being very careful and Game balance seems to be one of ..if not the Top priority
.. in Starhawk .... So if Matchmaking is to work .. It wont be like any other match making that exists now

Really, since when? If true that is awesome! I personally don't care for PR servers, just as long as I can browse official ranked with server lists I will be happy.
But I would definitely like to see where you read/heard about Official ranked being server list and MM.

I too would like to add my support for server browsing rather than matchmaking. As noted, I honestly can't think of a single game where matchmaking works properly.
(in particular, Homefront was such a massive failure with their matchmaking that I won't even play the game... the game itself was great but taking 20 minutes to get into a game was ridiculous and the added issues of using matchmaking while grouped with friends simply didn't work and the group ALWAYS broke up. Matchmaking is more trouble than it's worth.)

Yeah I prefer choosing my server too. Nothing worse than using quick join only to get into a game that your ping is like 280.
I wonder if they can keep the option seperate like in warhawk. You can use quick join for matchmaking or browse the available servers and direct deploy if you want.
