I've had my ps3 since 08, its a fat version.
I've heard a beep, while playing Starhawk, but never got a shut down.It probably just overheated.
I have the fat version too. It used to admit a strange beep/blip noise after hours of use. My friends at Gamestop (save the harsh comments for another time) suspect it is a heat warning. They advised me to place the PS on it's own shelf, protect it from dust and pet fur and make sure it has air. SInce I did this it rarely happens
