So I must admit, I used to be a pokefreak. I had a Gameboy Color just for Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, then Gold and Silver. And since then, I cut off when I realised Ruby and Saphire were more of the same.
But a couple of things have piqued my interest lately in the franchise. First, the first actual direct sequels to any pokemon set. Black and White 2 actually took the same exact setting of the first set, put it 8 years later, and brought about a striking twist to a stagnant franchise. It made the entire franchise valid by packing in a possibility of catching ALL the pokemon in the set, so that is definately something to get excited about if you've been missing out for a while.
But the newly announced games really have me taken aback at the entire restructuring of the franchise. Pokemon X and Y (yes, I'm serious) is made in three dimensions (as in what we're actually used to in games as opposed to being on the 3DS) and will be set in a European inspired Pokemon region. Also, the region specific pokemon are being drawn with a European aesthetic, as opposed to the Japanese ridulousness that has spawned with redundancies these last 3 sets.
It is not a reboot. They will just continue on with the theme that we have to catch all 76816 pokemon, but at least the change of pace and setting is refreshing. Also gamefreak is revamping the fighting, and instead of static images, we'll start getting animated pokemon attacks, ala colliseum from the N64 days.
There are very few games that do this anymore, but this may be the 3DS's systen seller for me.
