is it possible to play multiplayer/split screen with someone else sitting next to you? can't seem to be able to use this function for my kids to play together

Yes. But you need two different PSN accounts to do so, both on the same system under different users I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

This is correct.  Both players need a separate account to play splitscreen, then you still need at least 4 players to start a game.  Playing online (with others) will allow that.

I always find in split-screen the framerate always drops massivley in the first game you join. Then after that game it seems fine.

Yup.  Sure is.  Although I think the free candy thing didn't always work so he went with something a little more subtle but somewhat outdated....
