Re: Content Filter

Jun 10, 2012

An option would be nice for some people I suppose, but in my opinion, it would take away from the way Naughty Dog wants people to experience the game. If you were put into situations like in The Last of Us, there would be about that much profanity. Also, I find the f word highly unique... It adds a lot of character and emphasis to all kinds of different remarks. If Naughty Dog took out the blood and profanity, I don't think it would be quite the game they want people to experience; dig?

The idea and philosophy behind this game is that it's not just a typical action game. It's not just some survival horror shooter that you're going to pop in and mindlessly run through and have a good time. It is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable, you're supposed to feel weak and squeamish. You're not meant to feel comfortable looking at the grisly fight scenes, you're not supposed to feel okay with all the f-bombs. Giving it a filter would make the player feel comfortable in a game that is all about creating emotional tension, so....while I don't mean to sound like a dick....I doubt your filter is going to get implemented. If you're not willing to play this game based on the word fuck, then you're sorely going to be missing out.

While i do believe the rating system is dying fast, i would support this. I'm 17 and and when ever my mom hears some form of a bad word, i get the look and she walks out. Would be nice to avoid... the dreaded look

i would think though, ND the people making E and T games for 16 years would have some form of filter

Naughty Dog, I'm wondering if you are willing, or already have, or are planning on implementing a content filter into your game. You want this to be a more mature game, which is understandable. But it would be great if you could add a content filter. More people would be able to buy an enjoy your game. It seemed when I mentioned it in another thread, someone was upset by the idea, saying for you guys to not change the game. But,  of course the content filter would be optional. The violence is not so much an issue as the language is. Being able to tone the language down, at least getting rid of the F-Word would be nice. And the violence could be toned down by removing blood, or removing blood splattering on walls, floors, etc, and gore, if there is any. Just think of it as filters in other games, like Call of Duty Black Ops for example.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would add a content filter to the game, as I"m sure others would too. And if you can't, or don't want to, I'd like to at least know why you are against adding it.

Thanks.

I made a similar thread about games in general. I think it's a great idea. Something similar to what was done in Brutal Legend. It had in game options to turn off the blood and filter the language if you want or to leave them on. You could make an "M" rated game "T" rated or even "E". It's a programming issue but if developers felt they could reach a larger audience this way they'd do it. Trouble is the ratings are basically meaningless as parents will get a "M" rated game for their kids anyway or the kids wilol find other ways of obtaining it.

nah, I'm fine with the way it is, it feels realistic. I'd be dropping f-bombs left and right if i were in that situation lol.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. Understand, It's my mother who would be keeping me from this game.. Even though I turn 18 next year. I have no problem with the F-Bomb, though when it is excessive enough, like the film Casino.. It has 400+ F-Bombs. It gets aggravating. I understand removing the blood and language would probably take away from the experience. But I'd feel it would still be a great game. It just depends. I myself dount ND would implememnt it. I'm hoping they will post a reply on this thread eventually though

Thanks for referring me to this post josh.  I appreciate that.  I completely agree that this game needs a filter.  I am 27, so i dont have to worry about parents, but i can tell you that the last thing my wife wants to hear is a bunch of f words (myself included).  Its frustrating that more and more games are taking such a mature approach.  Thats fine, i just wish they would include options for those who dont want it.  I dont want to have to just play mario games just because game developers cant throw in a filter (even though i love mario).  Ihave written naughty dog 4 times so far without a response.  What gives?  Anyone heard what they think on this subject?

I know dude. I just want a reply. Even if they say no that's fine, well that's not fine, I'd be dissappointed but oh well. I just want a reply. Yes? No? Why or why not?

Hopefully we'll get one.

I'm alright with it as it is now, though if they decide to add a content filter then I'm cool with that too. I just hope they don't tone down the game just because people are requesting for a content filter.

Don't tell him how to live his life. It sounds like his parents are trying to raise a decent person. And also, don't lie about the game featuring a "few" swear words. The Last of Us demo had more swearing in 8 minutes than I have heard in the last 3 R rated movies I've watched haha
