History of zombie stories in movies/video games/ tv shows

Was wondering with the popularity of the 'Walking Dead' and now 'Last of Us' that deals more with survivor horror rather than zombies is suvivor horror a rather new turn in the zombie story franchise. Were most of the stories in games/movies/television shows prior to Walking Dead more about going out and hacking as many zombies as you could and not about how people would handle an apocalyptic situation like that.

I know for a year or more I would have people tell me that I should check The Walking Dead out because it was a really good show and was never very interested in doing so because from what I had seen zombie shows were all about nameless people randomly going out and slicing and dicing as many zombies as they could without a great deal of development to the actual characters. Eventually I went 'what the heck' and decided to get The Walking Dead off of netflix when I couldn't find anything else I wanted to watch at the time and to my great surprise and relief the main plot really wasn't about zombies at all. It was about how these groups of people are suviving in a world that had a zombie apocalypse.

So were The Walking Dead and The Last of Us really some of the first stories in the zombie story franchise that dealt with surving more than it did killing zombies or were there other zombie stories prior that dealt with these issues in great detail.

By the way please no spoilers about The Walking Dead past season 2. I am still waiting to watch season 3 of TWD when the dvd is released next month. Then I will be all caught up and can start talking on Walking Dead forums about that show.

I liked the Walking Dead. After watching 3 seasons though I feel it is more of a soap-opera with zombies in it, as opposed to a show about zombies that features drama.

Yeah though I think it is natural that those kinds of things happen when you are dealing with a large group rather than one or two people. If they make another TLOU game that takes place sometime within Tommy's camp you know there are going to be soap opera moments as well when they get into how these people are living together.

I liked Tommy's character alot. It is too bad we don't get to see alot of him. The dam level was a big let-down for me. Just when you think something really important was going to happen, it's bandit attack time again. Wasted opportunity
