My Game/Immersion-Breaking Thought (and something else)

[ Edited ]

I have noticed in many of the interviews with ND devs that they keep saying that Ellie is supposed to be a helper and isn't meant to get in the way of the player. With that in mind, will she (Ellie) be totally invulnerable? I understand that ND doesn't want players to constantly have to save her all the time, but I'd find it to be totally unimmersive if she can't get into any trouble at all. If she's essentially untouchable, you're not really "protecting" her. It's all about only YOU surviving. I'd like to feel a sense of responsibility over this girl rather than making sure my health alone is doing fine. At least some notification would be nice. For example: You've already attracted the attention of some hunters. While you're running through the rooms, it'd be nice to hear one yell, "I saw a girl! There's a kid around here!" or something like that.

On a lesser note, please tell me that Joel wrapping his arm up is not the only healing animation. That would bug me SO badly. :smileyfrustrated:

Someone on neogaf who played the demo at PAX mentioned that his buddy got Ellie killed by accident, so assuming that's true, then she isn't invulnerable. I just wonder how much negligence it would exactly take to get her killed.

I hope that the hunters mention Ellie if they see her too. It would be pretty crazy immersive to hear them say things about her that would give us incentive to stay alive for her sake. "Flank left, we'll kill this **bleep** but keep the girl alive"

As for the healing, I hope so too :smileyhappy:

I hope she is, during gameplay atleast. Dying, or failing an objective because of an AI is among the worst offenses in videogames. There are scripted moments where she will need your help, and that's good enough for me. I mean, Ellie is capable, I have a feeling she'll grow into an experienced survivor through out the story. Maybe Bioshock Infinite set the bar to high for AI partners, but nobody likes 15 hour escort missions.

I know where you're coming from. I don't like irritating escort missions either, but it just seems unrealistic if she doesn't get in a bind during gameplay in a (semi) unscripted fashion. I might be coming off as the guy that likes the problems with AI partners that ND is trying to fix, but I'm not. I love the fixes they're making, but I hope they also keep it in a realistic perspective.

Naughty Dog already said this game would not be a giant escort mission, but with that said I disagree. I hope Ellie is vulnerable, at least at first. Once we teach her how to use weapons, and once she's experienced brutality first hand, she'd become more adapt and combat savvy. I think it would become extremely boring if Ellie was invincible.

You know I don't really care how it is. Whichever way it goes I'm sure naughty dog will make it work. There are some games where protecting someone for the whole game isn't annoying like RE4. If ellie can die I'm sure it won't be annoying. From all the game plays I've seen ellie A.I. Looks very good. And by good I mean out of your way. Like every time there were enemies in the pax demo its like she disappeared. She wasn't anywhere near danger

Ellie can only die in scripted parts of the game, she doesn't die in the game.
