Re: My thoughts on the ending. SPOILERS!!!

Jun 16, 2013

Again, why would Joel care? Fireflies, bandits, the military, Bill, David... I highly doubt Joel cares about humanity as a whole. The only people we really seem him get along with is Ellie, Tess and Henry plus his little brother. Tommy was a mixed bag.

Marlene was an extremely, extremely shady character when you read her diary and recordings. Again, setting Joel up to escort Ellie in the first place.

It has nothing to do with what I personally would do, we're talking about Joel as a character. Just because there is a chance, slim or large, doesn't mean he will take it when it means letting Ellie die. To him, she is probably the only thing that is good in the world, what reason is there for him save the rest and kill off the one good thing in the world, to him? Like I said, we're not talking about an emotionally stable man to way up the pros and cons on a large scale but merely personal. He consistently has a saviour complex because of his daughter.

What is right and wrong is pretty objective here too, we're talking about killing a somewhat innocent girl who has only ever killed in self defence. If Joel let it happen, his hands would be even more bloodied than they already are. Just because it serves the greater good does not make it morally right for everyone and everything. I think that was kinda the point of the ending.

Re: My thoughts on the ending. SPOILERS!!!

Making a choice would have ruined it in my opinion. The ending was perfect.I don't know about you, but I got the vibe tha Ellie knew what was going on in the end, but didn't wanna tell joel...that maybe she actually wanted to go through with the procedure seeing as Joel was unconcious for a while.

I agree that what Joel did was kind of selfish and such...but if you played through the game, you can tell that he isn't exactly a man with good moral values. In this game you aren't playing a hero, you are playing as a smuggler trying to survive by doing another job that evolves into something more throughout the game.

By the end of the game, he's calling Ellie baby girl, such as he did with Sarah and is basically seeing her as a new daughter. I mean he tortured 2 guys brutally and killed them, killed Marlene point blank, despite his injury, battled the winter and hunters to get her back, had subtle bonding moments with her throughout the game, and then all of a sudden is told we are gonna harvest her brain for a cure and kill her. Why wouldn't he fight for her at this point?

Especially taking into consideration that this is a 20-21 year infection that even if it is a cure, you think that it would fix anything. The already infected would still roam the place, people will still be divided, and the world is already decayed.

In other words, would you let the only person close to you; where both of you have literally risked your lives for each other numerous times, and have bonded with very closely, die for a slim chance at curing an already dead world?

That is why Joel is such a **bleep**. He doesn't care about something the he SHOULD care about. He is doing what is best for HIM and not what is best for humanity. Not all of humanity is evil so he should be taking that into account when making his decision on whether to let Ellie live or go through with the operation.

When Ellie dies, either killed by a zombie or of old age, the chance at a cure dies with her. All hope is lost as it is pretty much stated she is the only person on the planet that is immune to the disease.

Why should he care about it? All the people left in the world are jerks basically. Joel was never portrayed as the knight in shining armour who saves the day...

@Niner4life9
I'm sure if one lost his daughter to a human being and then getting to know one like Ellie and having to do it all over again:
I think I'd do what Joel did...

Especially after our journey with Ellie.

She isn't though. Again, they've tested on other people before as found in Marlene and the Doctor's audio and written diaries. There are more like her. The only part Joel lied about was that they'd stopped looking, the rest was true. They had looked at other people who were immune and got nothing. Ellie was just next on their list.

You are expecting a man who has been pushed and pushed for twenty years taking pretty much the worst the world of The Last of Us had to offer... he hadn't once thought rationally throughout the entire game; only thinking about survival. He kept to character, what did you honestly expect from such a man other than what he had been doing the entire time? He hadn't cared throughout, from the start, he isn't magically going to care at the end.

Would the world be completely better off in Joel's life time if he let her die and the disease was cured? Probably not but it would be well on its way back. That is like you saying "I don't give a **bleep** about what happens to this planet and mankind after I die since I won't be alive to see it". That statement just make you an a.s.s.h.o.l.e.

When are we told Joel isn't one? That's the entire point, man. He isn't a hero, he is a protagonist. That's all. 90% of his actions make him one. I can't rationalise why you think his character would suddenly change. If anything it would have been sloppy writing to make him break character that way.

he doesn't give a **bleep** about the planet... at that point all he cares for is Ellie, and if he lost her whether or not the planet got better, he wouldn't have anything.

Stop acting like you wouldn't do the same, not every video game has to force you to play the good guy making the right decision and saving the day by the end.
