Joel was using the pipe to kill the runner. But then the Clicker death cutscene zoomed the camera in. Which is why the camera was so jumpy.

I keep doing that on games where shoulder switch is located on the analog sticks, they really need to make that optional.

 

People who are rough with pads while playing will often click that by accident. That's why I've gone through about 29 PS3 pads. accidental clicking eventually breaks it too.

 

But the obvious answer is there was two clickers playing, the player was really a clicker.
