It might seem like an odd comparison to make, but throughout my first playthrough of the Last of Us, the game that I made the most comparisons with wasn't The Walking Dead, Enslaved or Uncharted, but Half Life 2. At a basic level this is probably because Half Life 2 is my favourite game ever, and TLOU has already shot right up there into my top 3. So in terms of quality they are, in my opinion, pretty similar.
In addition, Naughty Dog and Valve are clearly both experts in creating atmosphere and detailed worlds. The feeling of tension and dread while in the basement of the hotel reminded me of Ravenholm. The experience of undertaking a journey through a living world was palpable in TLOU, and this is mirrored in the airboat and buggy sections of HL2.
More than anything else though, TLOU and HL2 are both masterclasses in level design. These games never get boring due to the constant change in environments and gameplay, and the sheer variety that is displayed in each. Bill's Town, Pittsburgh, the Dam, the University and then (my favourite part of the game) playing as Ellie at the start of Winter. City 17, the Canals, Black Mesa East, Ravenholm. Each game has an abundance of different locales and setpieces which makes them constantly entertaining and never dull. It definitely makes me think that ND must be huge fans of HL and Valve.
Sorry for the rant, but I adore both of these games and couldn't help but notice their similarities. Did anyone else make this connection and, if not, what other games were you surprised to find had many things in common with TLOU?
Yes the Half-Life series. I wanted Valve to announce the much awaited Half Life 3, since they left the episode 2 in a cliffhanger kind of way. I keep hoping that they will announce that game before I die? I just hope if they do make another that they keep the same character model around; just improved of course. I hate it when they dramatically alter the appearance of characters. Yet I can see how you can make the comparison with the zombie like creatures you find in Half Life 2. I was impressed with the world that The Last of Us' team created. Yet after realizing that I can sneak by most of the clickers. They didn't seem all that scary. The one part where you are Ellie on survivor mode, you are with David and the clickers seemed to see you even if you weren't moving?
I always wanted to play Half-Life 2. That means I'd have to play the 1st, doesn't it?
