Me neither, just a heads up for those who thought that 1 PS3 could render those graphics in real time. :smileywink:

To be honest I don't see the problem.

Dec 13, 2011

I wouldn't call the wording vague, in-engine is in-engine. If it were real-time they would've been more than happy to say so, "real-time" or "in-game" as some developers call it. Besides, this is nothing new from Naughty dog, if you've paid attention you'd know that a lot of the cinematics for the Uncharted games have also been rendered in-engine with parameter tweaks for better quality.

Well, point is that most people don't know the difference between in-engine VS in-game and then you see false headlines, like this one:

http://www.myniritori.com/rendered-real-time-ps3/

They somehow conjecture that ND found a "magic formula" and produced 10x better graphics than UC3... I am sure that TLOU will be a fantastic game, but graphics-wise it will probably be on par with UC3. :smileyhappy:

This assumption is wrong though. This is not 8 PS3s need to render a frame, it's a farm of PS3s each rendering out individual frames on their own for any cinematics (just as we did for U3).

We could choose to only do it on 1 PS3, but rendering 4 thousands cinematics frames would take a while.

It's all running in engine and besides some quality things that Christian mentions on the twitter, there's no massive voodoo going on here.  Our point at Naughty Dog was to always have as much parity between gameplay quality and cinematics quality as possible, as if there's too much of a difference it breaks from the experience.

No system can render graphics like that in real-time, yet...

No system can render graphics like that in real-time, yet. Don't know what happened with U3 mind, the gameplay graphics were a noticable step down quality wise, but the cinematics were a step up from U2, for the most part. That said, U2 stayed consistent throughout. Anyway the trailer for the Last of Us looks better than Uncharted's cinematics, but maybe it's just the art style.

- Insert bluray in PS3, press play

- Record the feed "directly from the PS3"

- Mention that last part in your trailer

- Interwebs: ZOMG PS3 does real life graphics!

- ???

- Profit!

Voluntarily misleading trailer from Sony, nothing new here. U3 promo wal full of lies too, from bullshots, 60fps gameplay to 3D mode showcased as 720p. Heck, even beta rewards were a total lie.

Lying such as this is nothing new in the industry tho, I wish someone would take them down for false advertising, because that really is in the end of the day.

It's no big news, they never said it was real time. You can call that "in-engine" instead of "in-game" cinematics.

U3 used the same "trick" and despite cinematics looked better than the playable parts, they felt in place, because they weren't rendered with mentalray or else.
