Who was the antagonist in The Last of Us?

Technically, you could say Marlene.  Though she wasn't "the bad guy".  If the roles were reversed around, Marlene easily could've been a conscientous person in a profound moral dillema and Joell the savage brutal villain who is slaughtering everybody.  Also, you could see the federal government as every bit destructive as the Fireflies.  The right-wing government killed Sarah and the left-wing resistance group was trying to kill Ellie.

The most villainous person would be David the cannibal but he represents a part of the game.  Not the overarching problem.

I guess you could say the antagonist is "society", though that is way too general and feels cheesy.

Or (I'm getting into absurd territory here), we could theorize that Ellie is the antagonist.  She's taking him down a path he does not want to go, instilling a sense of commitment into him.  She is willing to die and leave him a broken man.

I'm just not sure who to call the antagonist.  Maybe some works simply don't have one.

Ellie.

Everyone would be happier if Ellie wasn't born.

Ellie nor David ain't the antagonists lol...
I mean you might as well say that Joel is xP
I wouldn't there is your typical villain in this game.
It is more the society and the remaining humanity that's become sinister and twisted...

i see how joel can be the bad guy, but he's certainly the protagonist. protagonist doesnt mean good. it just means the main character.

so your answer would moreso be along the lines of "human nature"

The Last of Us does not have an antagonist but divers.

David is the antagonist in Chapter 9 (Lakeside Resort), Marlene is the antagonist in Chapter 11 (Firefly Lab) Tess originally supposed to be the main antagonist of the game before the final narrative had been established.

The only real antagonist of the game is Survival and everything that happens in the game is tied to it.

Things aren't black or white in TLoU and it's not a game where you can just pigeon hole characters a simply good or bad. As in real life the characters are complicated with many different sides to their personalities - both good, bad and ambiguous. This is one of the reasons people relate more to the characters in TLoU then in other games because they are so rounded and human.

There was no antagonists, well not really anyway, but I guess if I had to answer I'd say Marlene... She's the final person that stands in your way of beating the game

Think about this...

How many lives would have been saved if Ellie just stayed in Boston?

How many Hunters and Fireflies would still be alive if Ellie just stayed in Boston?

Poor David wouldn't have gotten is face sliced off if Ellie would have stayed in Boston.

How many lives would have been saved if David didn't like to eat humans?

He did what was necessary to survive.

Ellie didn't need to go across the country to survive.
