I mean, right now he totally looks like your usual action game hero. He even looks somehow similar to Nathan Drake, and that's not something they should want, considering their reiterations about their desire to differentiate both games. He also looks like Booker DeWitt from Bioshock Infinite.
I know it's probably too late now, but I just can't believe no one in this goddamn studio thought about the possibility of giving him longer hair. Not only would it differentiate a bit from just about every other recent videogame hero, but would also make sense given he barely cuts his beard and well, the inconvenience of living in a post apocalyptic world.
I hope this is not a sign of the Naughty Dog's quality slump and general lack of common sense that was first introduced with Uncharted 3.
Yes, I made a thread just about his hair, and yes, it's a big deal. Just preventive answers to any possible wiseass.

I bet Tess makes him cut it. lol. That, and long hair is a disadvantage when fighting, just more to pull on. Not that any of this matters, Joel looks awesome.
I have noticed that ND really likes ponytales on their females though.

Why does Ellie have long hair? Why is the sky blue? What is life?
Ellie has long hair because the people that designed her virtual appareance made the hair of the model long. The sky is blue because of the Rayleigh scattering. Life is the element that differentiates unanimated objects from these animated, self-sustaining objects.
That, and long hair is a disadvantage when fighting, just more to pull on.
So why are enemies/friends with long hair? Everyone should be bald then.
