MULTIPLAYER

 

  • New game mode - Interrogation

Interrogation is a 4 versus 4, two-part objective game mode where rival factions vie to find and open the other faction’s lockbox, stealing the supplies inside. Each team must first achieve five interrogations of players on the other team. Players can get interrogations by shivving an enemy, or getting an enemy into the down state, then pressing triangle while next to them. Once your team collects five interrogations the location of the enemy’s lockbox will be revealed. Your team must attempt to open the lockbox before the other team can collect five interrogations and open your lockbox first. Whichever team opens the opposing team’s lockbox first wins.

 

  • Revive range has increased slightly (about 1 meter). It’s more difficult to accidentally crawl out of range when a teammate is reviving you now
  • Players can prevent opponents from finishing Executions/Interrogations so that the opponent does not receive Parts for the special Execution/Interrogation. (The downed player will still lose their life, but this makes preventing Executions/Interrogations more helpful to your team as you prevent the other team from gaining Parts.)
  • Matchmaking update: players should find opponents around their level of experience more often and teams should be balanced more evenly
  • Item cache locations adjusted for balance on University, High School, Lakeside, and Downtown
  • Starting cameras adjusted so they show your player with greater frequency
  • Item cache disbursement tweaked so additional items are given out more fairly 
  • Winning a Survivors match by a count of 4 rounds to 0 now means your team will get more bonus parts for winning the match by that margin. This applies for games with scores of 4-1, 4-2, etc. as well. Rewards are tiered by how dominant your team is. This system is in place for Interrogation mode as well.

MULTIPLAYER

 

Abandoned Territories Map Pack DLC

  • DLC playlist added for each game type.  This includes both the retail maps and the DLC maps, but the DLC maps should appear much more frequently in the vote.

Gameplay

  • Fixed an issue where players on the winning team would occasionally get fully crafted items or machetes from caches, while players on the losing team would get incorrect items.
  • Players should no longer get comeback weapons (pre-crafted molotovs / bombs / purchase weapons) when they are winning by more than a small margin.
  • Fixed the consistency of comeback weapons spawning - there should be less comeback weapons in close matches and more consistent spawning in severely unbalanced matches. Once a player receives comeback weapons, however, they will not receive them again until a certain amount of progress has occurred in the match.
  • 2x4 Spawning logic has been adjusted in Supply Raid and Interrogation:
    • Fixed a bug where it would occasionally be impossible for a player to receive a 2x4 in a game.
    • Reworked the initial 2x4 spawning logic to make the first 2x4 spawn a bit later to balance the escalation of the match.
    • Lowered the overall number of potential 2x4s that could spawn in a match by including weighting based on match progress.
  • The additional hit on modded melee weapons has been moved from Brawler Level 1 to Level 2, and the health gain from melee hits moved from Level 2 to 1.
  • Added a Parts bonus for late joiners, based on when you join a match in progress. This bridges the gap between players who started from the beginning of the game and might have a Parts advantage over the late joiner.
  • When late-joining beyond the first 2 minutes that match will no longer count towards any clan progress or missions.
  • Fixed an issue on Checkpoint and Lakeside that had locations where some items could not be picked up.
  • Made a fix to prevent players from being able to climb the tilted flag pole on the High School map.
  • Fixed an issue with level graphics dropping out on The Dam.

Interrogation Mode Fixes

  • Games no longer end in ties unless both teams are on the same section of the unlocking process.  If one team has more interrogations than the other, that team will win the match.
  • The additional parts bonus for winning by a large margin is only awarded when the lockbox is fully unlocked.  Otherwise only the standard win bonus is awarded.
  • Killcard now correctly describes whether your character was executed or interrogated.
  • Fire on the ground (from a Molotov) now damages the player when they attempt to unlock the lockbox and will properly interrupt the unlock process.
  • Sounds have been added to the Interrogation animation
  • Fixed a bug where the end-of-match music was not playing in Interrogation mode.

Technical Fixes

  • Intro speech should no longer occasionally be heard twice at the start of the game
  • A flashing exclamation mark will be shown on DLC option for when new items are added

To enact bans, we need concrete proof that an illicit action is taking place, and that is where you, our awesome community, must step up to help. When reporting someone who you believe to be cheating or exploiting the game we need you to record a brief video clip; this can be done via smartphone, camcorder, or PlayStation Eye. The video must pass the following criteria:

 

  • Clear and steady shot for at least 15 seconds
  • Must NOT be publically viewable – send direct or non-public links only
  • The cheating described in the report is easily identifiable and recognizable.
  • Video is captured in the following formats: (M2V, MOV, MP4, etc)
  • Must be uploaded to an accessible website (Youtube, Mediafire, Sendspace, etc)

  • Under the new matchmaking criteria, all players must have a 100ms ping or better to the host.
  • A good ping at the start of a match does not guarantee a good ping throughout the match - especially if your internet connection is in use by other people/devices.
  • Players behind a closed NAT may have (but not necessarily) a higher latency to other players in the match because their network traffic will always be routed through the host, whereas normally much of this traffic will be peer to peer.
    • To check your NAT type, go to Settings --> Network Settings --> Settings and Connection Status List --> Scroll down to NAT Type.
    • Type 3 is closed, Type 2 is moderate, Type 1 is open.

"Thanks for the continued feedback on our matchmaking.  While there are some larger fixes coming in the next patch to address latency, in the meantime we are making a change to matchmaking to address another issue, namely getting matched with players who are speaking a different language.  Previously there were 6 stages in the search process that required that the host have the same language setting, now there are 12 (out of a total of 19).  This should make it more likely to get matched with players using the same language setting.  This change is in version.95 and should be live now.

Networking - Patch 1.06: Networking Changes Discussions

We've been working hard to improve the latency issues that many of our players have reported. We have made two changes to networking in Patch 1.06 which should lead to improvements in online play. We will keep a close watch on how these changes work out, as it is difficult to effectively test for the real-world environment. We absolutely need to hear your experiences and your feedback about these changes.

  • Network update rate doubled
    • Doubled the rate player movement updates are sent peer-to-peer, reduced latency in game engine to 66ms.
    • Increasing the network update rate will increase network traffic on your Internet connection. Let us know if you are having trouble with your Internet connection after this change and/or if you are hitting our Lag Detection Check frequently.
  • Lag Detection Check now stricter
    • This change is designed to catch situations where a player is lagging significantly and causing severe problems.
    • When the Lag Detection Check occurs, your character will be frozen in place and you will see the Network Trouble icon appear on your screen. This is to ensure the lagging player cannot gain an advantage during this time.
  • Added Network Trouble icon
    • If you are seeing the Network Trouble icon frequently, here are some things you can do to improve your connection:
      1. Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi.
      2. Avoid any major internet usage while playing. Things like torrents, Netflix, YouTube, etc. will have a big impact on your performance.
      3. Ensure your NAT (Network Address Translation) is not restricted (Type 3).  To check if it is, go to the XMB --> Settings --> Network Settings --> Network connection test). Check with your router manufacturer for specific instructions on how to open up your NAT for your specific router model.
  • Network Lag Detection Feedback
    • Feedback we are looking for:
      1. Are you still seeing severe lag situations, e.g. dying several seconds after you killed another player?
      2. Are you getting the Network Trouble icon frequently? Do you see it almost constantly or only a few times during a match?
      3. Have you tried the above steps to improve your connection?

 

Interrogation Mode - Patch 1.06: Interrogation Mode Changes Discussions

  • Under certain conditions, the defending team would respawn too quickly and too close to their lockbox, making it too difficult for the attacking team to make progress. To alleviate this condition, we have made the following changes.
    • All players will have a minimum respawn time of 7 seconds, if their lockbox has spawned.
    • A team will not respawn instantly when the whole team is wiped out, if their lockbox has spawned.
    • Spawn exclusion zones around the lockboxes have been adjusted across all maps so defenders don't spawn too close to their own lockbox.
  • Other fixes
    • To improve spawning, reduced time that dead allies affect the downweight on spawn points from 40 seconds to 20 seconds.
    • Fixed an issue where a player could get downed by a bomb just as they open a lockbox, and continue opening the lockbox while at 0 health.
    • Fixed an issue where a lagging player could continue unlocking the box for some time after being attacked or downed.
      • Note: Unfortunately this fix introduced a new issue where a player opening the lockbox cannot be shivved properly. This issue was caught after we submitted this patch and we weren't able to update the patch before going live. This is a known issue and we will issue a fix for this in the next patch.
    • Fixed an issue with the end of match music stinger so it plays when the "You Won" or "You Lost" pop-up appears on screen, before the final scoreboard.

 

Survivors Mode

  • Fixed an issue that prevented the 2x4 to spawn in the center item cache.

 

Reviving and Bleed-out - Patch 1.06: Reviving & Bleed-out Discussions

Under certain conditions the revive system can allow teams to get their teammates back into combat too quickly, as when there are multiple players reviving.  To address these issues we've made the following changes.

  • Reduced the speed bonus that a player assisting with the revive gives from 50% to 25%.
  • Reviver skill now only applies for the player who started the reviving action.
  • Parts for reviving a player are reduced from 100 to 50 after that player has already been revived. Resets to default on player death.
  • Supply Raid and Survivors only: Bleed-out time for a player (15 seconds in Supply Raid, 40 seconds in Survivors) is now reduced by 25% each time that player is revived, up to a maximum 50% off. Resets to default on player daeth.

 

Melee - Forums Thread

  • Fixed where shooting a player who was in process of a melee attack could result in the melee attacker aborting the move after the melee victim already registered the hit.
  • Now melee attacks will only abort when the attacker is in the wind-up phase of the attack.
    • Note: because of latency, you may be seeing a player in the wind-up phase on your machine, but on their machine the attack is already connecting. In this case the melee attack will not abort.
  • Fixed “shiv dance”. If you damage a player, that player won't be able to shiv you for the next 3 seconds. 

 

Spawning

  • Fixed an issue where downed players would make it more likely for teammates to spawn near them.

 

Supply Boxes - Patch 1.06: Supply Box Changes Discussions

  • Fixed an issue where the machete could spawn as a comeback item when the player already has a machete.
  • When spawning a comeback item, a molotov will only spawn if the player already has 2 bombs. If the player already has 2 bombs and 2 molotovs, no comeback item will spawn.
  • Fixed Supply Raid and Interrogation where players with 1 execution and only 1 or 2 deaths would get additional crafting ingredients from a supply box
  • Fixed exploit where a player could fire off a couple shots before opening a supply box and get extra ammo.
    • Players now receive ammo in more precise quantities, so players won't get a box of 5 bullets when they should only get 2 bullets.
    • As a result, more ammo boxes will spawn with varying amounts of ammo.
    • Slight adjustments were made to the ammo given for certain weapons to keep them consistent with the current ammo given under the old scheme.
  • Fixed an issue where players could lose a comeback item or weapon by being killed after opening a supply box, but before picking anything up. Now, players will have the same chance of getting that item or weapon at the next supply box.
  • Fixed issue in Survivors where players could get additional items by opening a box, not picking up the items, then going to another box to open and pick up items, and returning to the first opened box to pick up additional items.
  • Fixed issue where player who was Last One Standing would not get any ammo from a supply box.
  • Fixed issue where Flamethrower could not be picked up when it spawned as a comeback weapon.
  • Re-balanced ammo in comeback weapon spawns to match the amount when purchased:
    • Shotgun went from 5 to 2.
    • Assault Rifle from 20 to 10.
    • El Diablo from 4 to 3.

 

Maps

  • Fixed an issue where two of the supply boxes on Bill's Town would not respawn in Survivors.
  • Fixed an issue in Supply Raid and Interrogation where the supply box behind the Sammy's sign on Bill's Town would respawn while players were still close to the spawn point.
  • Fixed an issue in all modes on Checkpoint where the item cache in front of the movie theater would not respawn under certain conditions.
  • Adjusted regions on High School for supply boxes in Elimination (side boxes) to improve the balance and ensure they respawn at the same rate as the other boxes on the map.

 

Weapon Balance
We have other weapon balance changes in the works, but with the amount of fixes going into this patch we haven't been able to spend enough time to implement and test them thoroughly. We'll let you know when they're ready.

  • Max ammo for Shorty increased from 6 to 8, due to ammo box spawning changes

 

Loadout Balance - Patch 1.06: Loadout Balance Changes Discussions

  • Crafter 3 increased from 5 to 6 loadout points.
  • Military Sniper purchase weapon decreased from 4 to 3 loadout points.
  • Machete purchase weapon decreased from 4 to 3 loadout points.
  • Strategist Level 1 decreased from 2 to 1 loadout points.
  • Collector parts bonus no longer applies to gifted items or healing.

 

Crashes
We have located one of the more common crashes that occurs when players late-join a match. Unfortunately, this fix didn't make it in time for this patch, but it will be in the next patch. In addition, we are still actively working to isolate and fix other reported crashes.

 

Misc

  • Fixed late-joining players receiving extra parts after a host migration occurs.
  • Fixed where some player outlines (allies or enemies) would fail to draw when enemies were marked using Hawk Eye 2 or 3.

Network Lag Detection Feedback - Patch 1.06: Networking Changes Discussions - Part 2

  • Feedback we are looking for:
      1. Are you still seeing severe lag situations - e.g. dying several seconds after you killed another player?
      2. Are you getting the disconnect icon frequently?  Do you see it almost constantly or only a few times during a match?
      3. Where are you located?
      4. Are you using a wired or wireless connection?
      5. What is your NAT type set to? (Check in XMB --> Settings --> Network Settings --> Network connection test)
      6. Are there any uploads, streaming video (YouTube / Netflix), or torrents going on while you're playing multiplayer?
      7. Have you tried exiting matchmaking and finding a new match? Does every match you find have the same issues?

This is a very difficult bug to reproduce and debug (and has many causes). Although our network programmer doesn't think the lag detect kicking in could cause this bug, we're going to try an experiment and change the lag detect threshold to where it was pre-1.06 and see if players are still getting the invisibility bug.

  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to exploit supply boxes for extra ammo and 2x4s.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed player who was the Last One Standing to get additional comeback items from multiple supply boxes.
  • Fixed a bug where the game would sometimes crash when late joining a match.
  • Fixed a bug where players on opposite teams who are spawning at the same time would sometimes spawn near each other.
  • Fixed a bug where players would sometimes get stuck on a black screen when the host quits out during the match intro.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to avoid being stunned by a smoke bomb by vaulting over cover.
  • Fixed a rare crash that occurred for the player who stayed in a matchmaking game after all other players had quit.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the death grunt VOX from playing when dying.

  • Fixed an issue that prevented players using an upgraded 2x4 from downing an enemy who was unlocking the lockbox while repeatedly pressing Triangle
  • Corrected the alignment of many intro animation cameras.
  • Fixed an issue where players were receiving large weapon ammo when downing an enemy with a melee weapon after changing to a pistol-only loadout.
  • Fixed bug where players would sometimes get no ammo from a down/execution when using a pistol-only loadout.
  • Fixed a bug where player would hold their large firearm while doing a melee finisher.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when the player would sign out while refreshing the in-game store.
  • Fixed an issue where game winning VOX would not play when a game of survivors was won with a shiv kill.
  • Fixed an issue where a player’s modded 2x4 attack animation would be canceled if a player vaulted over an object.
  • Fixed a bug where the shiv cone wasn't aligned properly in certain cases, which made it easier to get a shiv from one side than the other.
  • The Military Sniper has reduced aim assist.

 

Feature additions and changes

 

Melee - Community Discussion

 

  • Machete now interrupts melee like a gunshot would.  This, combined with the change to a 3-hit swing allows it to beat an upgraded 2x4 in a fight where both players swing at the same time.
  • Machete now has a 3 swing animation and takes 3 hits to down.
  • Upgrading any Melee Weapon now requires 3 items to upgrade (blade, binding and rag).

 

Weapons - Community Discussion

 

  • Burst Rifle now destroys armor in 2 bullets.
  • The first upgrade for the 9mm and Shorty now cost 250 parts.
  • The upgrades for the Hunting Rifle and Burst Rifle now cost 300 for the first level and 600 for the second level
  • The Hunting Rifle scope-in time is slightly faster at the base level. The upgraded levels have not changed.
  • The Hunting Rifle and Military Sniper headshot damage is increased. Now if you get a headshot on an enemy with a helmet, it will only take a body shot to down them.
  • Silenced weapon sounds now falloff at 70 meters.  Silenced weapons can be heard less easily at a distance.

Audio

  • Players wearing certain masks and helmets will now have a muffled filter added to their dialogue.
  • Players will now call out to teammates while in the down state.

Menu

  • Playlists have been updated:
    • Find Match (DLC 2) has been added.  This includes the new maps from the Reclaimed Territories map pack (available now), and the original maps, although the DLC maps will appear much more frequently.
    • Find Match (No Parties) is now at the top of the list for each gametype
    • Find Match renamed to Find Match (Parties Allowed)
    • Removed upcoming map image that would appear above the loadout selections during loading to make room for additional loadouts.
    • When the user clicks on a DLC item, they are now taken directly to the item to download instead of the store listing.

Survival Skills

  • Sharp Ears now has a third level and has had all levels significantly buffed.

Maps

  • Downtown has had its render settings altered to make players appear brighter on the level and to make the overall lighting on the level a bit brighter.
  • The depth of field on High School was tweaked to match the other multiplayer maps.

Supply Boxes

  • Supply boxes now only spawn comeback weapons (purchase weapon or machete) when a player is the "Last One Standing". In situations where a player would have received a comeback weapon, that a player now receives a 2x4 (if they don’t already have one).
  • Increased threshold for comeback parts to spawn so they won't spawn when a team is losing by a small margin.

 

New Maps - Community Discussion

 

  • Water Tower
    • Set in Lincoln, PA, the Water Tower map features two primary chokepoints for some deadly face-to-face confrontations. It's mainly an outdoor map with a few indoor areas and some very unique lighting. It might seem open but it's really a tight map that's perfect for close quarters melee.
  • Capitol
    • Set in Boston, the Capitol Map features indoor and outdoor gameplay. It encourages the intelligent use of flanking.
  • Coal Mine
    • Set in Colorado, Coal Mine is a winter map that is spotted with abandoned buildings. It's a spacious map that has long lines of sight and a bridge that's a perfect perch for snipers. The dynamic snowstorm obscures the view so be on your toes.
  • Wharf
    • Set in the rusted-out docks where Joel encountered Robert, the Wharf map features close quarters gameplay, two snipers nests, and a giant boat. It's full of good opportunities for climbing, flanking and stealth.

    • (1 loadout points) Bleed out time is increased by 25% and slightly increased downed crawling speed.

  • Players using Bomb Expert 3 will no longer be stunned by their own smoke bomb while vaulting or falling
  • Hit sound and enemy flinch reaction for bombs and molotovs now only plays when you actually damage your opponent. The flinch radius was larger than the damage radius on bomb, molotov, and launcher.
  • Fix for late-joiner in a game of Survivors getting additional ingredients and parts at the first supply box in every round
  • Fix for picking up a modded melee weapon and receiving an extra binding / blade / rag
  • Fix for Specter firing sound not playing on University map
  • Fix to Last One Standing not kicking in when players quit a match to leave one player on a team

Supply Box Balance

  • Supply boxes now adjust for unbalanced teams.  Being on a team of 3 players against a team of 4 players is equivalent to being down by 3 lives in Supply Raid or 2 rounds in Survivors.  There is no reduction in items for players who are on the team with more players. 

Team Balance

  • Improved logic for balancing teams between matches
    • Players are rated based on their combined leaderboard KDR values from Supply Raid and Survivors.
    • Teams are balanced such that the sums of each team's player ratings are as close as possible.
    • This also applies to parties, however when parties are involved the assignments of players are more limited so the team balance may not be as close.
    • Note that Interrogation mode also uses the combined KDR values from Supply Raid and Survivors.  In future updates if we have time we'd like to add a unique player rating for each mode.

"Patch 1.02 will be deployed in North America today. We are working to have the patch deployed in Europe as soon as possible over the weekend, and we expect the patch to be deployed in Asia next week. If you are already logged in, be sure to quit out of the game and check your Downloads notifications that the update file for The Last of Us Remastered has been downloaded and installed.

 

As many of you may know, especially if you are among the many, many, many people who have been playing our Factions multiplayer mode, that some people have been experiencing long wait times while trying to find a match. We've deployed several LiveUpdates over the past week in an effort to improve the matchmaking wait times. Things have definitely improved but there still remains work for us to get the matchmaking experience where we feel it should be. Patch 1.02 is our latest effort to continuing improving the matchmaking experience.

 

Once the patch has been deployed, the team here will be keeping a close eye on the time it takes to find a match among our player community so we can continue to address this issue.

 

One tip: if you've found yourself waiting what you feel is a very long time to get into a match, quit out of matchmaking and go back into "Find a Match". Even though this adds an extra step, we've found that it sometimes helps players get into matches quicker than continuing to wait." - arne

Of course, if there are no games at the time while you are searching that are in your geo location, matchmaking will move on to widen the search geographically.  Feedback about this latest update will be super helpful to us as we continue to work on improving matchmaking. We'd like to know what your average wait times are, what playlist you are in, how many players in your party, what country you are in and what time of day you were playing.   • Updated matchmaking system to decrease the time it takes to find a match
  • Implemented Party Chat/microphone fixes and improvements
  • Fixed bug where microphone icon would not appear next to the player’s name when talking in the lobby or in-game
  • Fixed various crashes and bugs in the game invite system
  • Adjusted controller vibration intensity when damaged by a gun or bow
  • Fixed an issue where the gun reticle would not display in multiplayer if it was turned off in single player
  • Fixed an issue where grunt and effort sounds could be heard coming from a player with Agility 2 equipped
  • Fixed an issue where Fortitude level 2 wasn't providing additional health when being shot by a bow while downed
  • Fix for bug where muting a player in the lobby causes a different player to be muted when the lobby changes

"We just pushed out a live update (version 1.04.20) to The Last of Us: Remastered with a couple small tweaks:

 

  • Removed a couple of the matchmaking stages that were rarely suceeding 
  • Set all maps to the same priority, so Beach and Financial Plaza should come up at the same frequency as all the other maps

"Live Update 1.04.21:

 

Since the PSN server update a couple weeks ago we haven't been seeing as many players experiencing the long matchmaking times that some people were getting during the couple months after the game launched.  As such we have updated the matchmaking settings so in each stage of matchmaking the server returns a larger number of matches (the same number which is used on the PS3).  Previously this number was set lower on PS4 to allow players to help counteract the long matchmaking times.

 

In practical terms what this should mean is that you have a better chance of finding a match with decent latency since you will be evaluating (pinging) more hosts during each stage of matchmaking.

 

We are still working on matchmaking in general and hope to have some further improvements to discuss in the near future." - ndi-edaly
