The Story of The Order 1886

The Order: 1886 takes place in a painstakingly recreated Victorian-Era London, which features familiar places such as the Palace of Westminster, Mayfair, Whitechapel, the Crystal Pallace, Big Ben, and the London Tube. But take a closer look. This alternate vision of London features new advances in technology brought about by an accellerated Industrial Revolution and the centuries-old conflict between Human and Half-breeds.

 
Giant airships patrol the London skies, and electric trains traverse the city on elevated tracks above busy streets. Amid this alternate history, The Order remains a pivotal part of the kingdom, with its council hidden deep within the halls of the government's seat.

 

 

Centuries of Conflict

In this alternate history, a dangerous foe known as Half-breeds emerged centuries ago. In response to this new threat, an elite order of Knights formed to protect humanity from this deadly threat. Strengthened by a mysterious liquid called Blackwater, the Knights of the Order are able to heal their wounds and extend their lifespans in order to engage this supernatural foe.


It is the year 1886, and through the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, humans have advanced technology to gain an advantage in this war. Now equipped with powerful weapons to aid in their struggle, The Order is starting to turn the tide against the Half-breeds.

“Galahad is one of the elder knights in the Order,” says creative director Ru Weerasuriya. “He’s connected with a group of people in the knights who have given him purpose, and that purpose happened to be to never question anything. He comes to the point, when the game starts, where there are things he’s always taken for granted and he realizes things are not as they seem.” As a character, Galahad begins the story as a steadfast and mostly unquestioning soldier in the ranks, even if he sometimes has doubts about the current doctrines that guide the knights of the Order. 

 

When designing Galahad for The Order, the development team looked to the historical use of the Galahad name in Arthurian legend, and drew inspiration from those stories. Like the Galahad of real-world legend, Galahad in The Order is renowned for his gallantry, and being among the best of the knights. 

 

However, the world of The Order’s alternate history 1886 challenges Galahad’s gallant nature with complicated ethical issues and gray moral quandaries. Over the course of the story, we see Galahad attempt to redefine himself in the light of these new challenges. In particular, the emerging threat of an opposing force of rebels in London fighting against The Order offers a dilemma. The rebels believe that the knights have failed to protect the poor, and that Galahad and the rest of the knights only look out for the aristocracy.

 

This complex class warfare is an emerging dilemma for Galahad, who has spent his life in battle against the supernatural threat of horrible half-breed creatures – it’s hard for him to wrap his mind around fighting his own kind. Through the course of the game, we learn who he is through his responses to these conflicts. “He’s the blank canvas that you start painting on,” says Weerasuriya. “Everything that is going to happen in this game is going to define who he is. And it’s going to bring back who he was – who he has repressed.”

 


Beyond the events of the game, Ready At Dawn is also putting a big focus on shaping the main character through the people around him – both friend and foe. “Every person, every relation, every event, is going to define this character. Sometimes the best heroes are defined not only by their friends, but by their enemies – and that’s true for Galahad.” While the identity of these enemies remains undisclosed, our early look at the game offered a potent glimpse of the relationship he shares with the rest of his squad. 

 

Sir Percival fits comfortably into the role of an older brother – the part of the team that always does the right thing, no matter what. Meanwhile, Lafayette offers a humorous foil for Galahad’s more serious tone, keeping things light in the midst of dark events. Finally, Lady Igraine offers yet another angle on Galahad’s personality. Originally, Galahad helped to train Igraine, but as the years have passed, Igraine is as much a partner and rival to Galahad as a former student. The two are equally skilled, and their long friendship might have evolved into something more if not for their sworn duty as knights. 

 

Beyond his relationships to both the characters and the world around him, our time at Ready At Dawn revealed Galahad as an impressively expressive protagonist thanks to the powerful visual technology of the game. Above and beyond Galahad’s unabashedly awesome mustache, the game often takes time to show off cinematic moments in which Galahad emotes and speaks with startling facial realism.

The group we call the Knights of the Round Table is referred to in this new game as The Order – a force of dedicated individuals founded by King Arthur centuries ago to confront horrifying half-breed creatures. In the year 1886, Sir Galahad is one of the most respected knights in The Order, but he needs all the help he can get fighting the rebels and other threats lurking among London. These are three of Galahad’s most trusted allies in his battles throughout much of the game.

Name: Isabeau D’Argyll
Alias: Lady Igraine

If you’ve read tales about King Arthur, you may remember his mother was named Lady Igraine. In The Order: 1886, Lady Igraine is a youthful-looking warrior named Isabeau D’Argyll. She and Galahad have a close but guarded relationship which started with her as his knight in training. Over the years the two become fond of one another, though their allegiance to The Order forbids them from ever acting on any underlying feelings. Isabeau’s character extends beyond her relationship with Galahad, however. She is strong-willed, skilled in combat, and fiercely loyal to The Order. “Isabeau is every bit the knight that Galahad is,” says Ru Weerasuriya, creative director on The Order: 1886. “There’s this kind of rivalry between them.”

Name: Sebastian Malory
Alias: Sir Percival

In Ready At Dawn’s story, the title of Sir Percival belongs to a man named Sebastian Malory. Enthusiasts of Arthurian lore may recall that Sir Thomas Malory is the 15th century author of the original Le Morte d’Arthur. In The Order, the gray-bearded Malory is the most seasoned warrior in Galahad’s squad. Malory acts as a trustworthy mentor to Galahad and personifies The Order’s noble agenda to protect the people of London. Malory and Galahad share joint tempered loyalty to The Order, and are close friends because of it.

Name: Marquis de Lafayette
Alias: Pending

Lafayette is The Order’s newest knight-in-training, but he’s no green recruit. The famed Marquis de Lafayette is an actual historic figure who made his name fighting in both the French and American Revolutions. The Order contacts Lafayette and opens his eyes to the larger scale conflict the organization was formed to fight. His strategic expertise and knowledge of the battlefield makes him an invaluable addition to Galahad’s squad, even if he hasn’t earned his knightly name yet. This apprentice has a brash, whimsical sense of humor that lightens the squad’s oftentimes grim demeanor.

The Right Tool for the Right Situation

Fire bolts of electricity to take out long-range targets with the Arc Gun, or rain down fire on enemies with the Thermite Rifle by dousing them in a cloud of flammable dust and igniting it with a superheated flare. The weapons of The Order: 1886 are all based on plausible science and technology.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ahead of Their Time

Advances in technology have also helped The Order patrol the city and keep its citizens safe. Airships patrol the skies, and are a constant reminder of the police state that controls Londoner's lives. Every member of The Order wears a wireless device to communicate with each other and the airships that patrol the skies. A variety of gadgets aid them in the work, such as the monocular that allows the Knights to see across great distances, signals airships via Morse code, and more.

The Combo Gun

The bread and butter of The Order’s arsenal. The combo gun has two different functions. The rifle component of the gun is good for gunning down foes from a distance. The other barrel delivers a concussive blast that knocks foes back like a Force push. Stunned enemies can then be picked off with rifle fire.

The Arc Gun

This high-voltage weapon is where things start to get more experimental. The arc gun has electric wires and components spread along its long metal rods. Electrical current zaps along this contraption as it warms up, creating a Jacob’s Ladder. This piece of bleeding edge technology shakes and smokes as it charges up a precise, long-distance bolt of energy. The way it zaps towards far off targets reminds us of Cole’s eagle-eyed lightning blast from Infamous.

The Thermite Rifle

The thermite rifle is the flashiest and most devastating of the bunch Ready At Dawn has revealed so far. Pellets packed with strips of aluminum iron oxide are blasted into the environment, which then break open into a cloud of glittery metal paper. A high temperature flare is then shot into the cloud, creating a chemical reaction that turns the cloud into a burning mass of melting metal. This devastating weapon is perfect for punishing enemies hiding behind cover.

Fragmentation Grenades

Everybody knows how grenades work – pull the pin and throw it before it blows up. The Order’s grenades are a little different than average. These thrown explosives resemble the handled “potato masher” grenades usually used by German troops. It also features a small spike that allows it to be stuck into walls or the floor, creating a nasty proximity mine.

The Communicator

Not every piece of tech used by the knights of The Order is deadly. This communication device is well ahead of its time, allowing Galahad and his crew to coordinate remotely through the dense city streets of London.

Ready At Dawn has created its own engine to take advantage of the PlayStation 4’s impressive tech. But improved technology is useless without artists capable of taking advantage of it.

  

“From an art standpoint, with every generational shift you can do more of everything,” Phail-Liff says. “You can nickel and dime – ‘Oh we have this many more polygons and significant more textures.’ There’s this standard order of magnitude growth on the whole detail of level. But some of the standout things for us, going from the PS3 generation to the PS4, are the shading and internal models. That’s a huge thing. On PS3 there’s a lot more approximations of how objects look and respond to light. With the PS4 we can implement a much more reality-based, advanced shading model. So metals aren’t just shiny, they actually look like the physical samples in the real world. So that’s something that, for getting polygon and texture budgets just makes everything from lighting to physical objects really shine.”

  

The creators of The Order: 1886 showed off this object shading technique in a brief demonstration. 3D objects are crafted for the game world, then artists detail them with brushes that impose pre-made textures onto them. For example, a rusty fire hydrant may include two different types of metal which each react differently to lighting. Pre-loaded systems like Ready At Dawn’s shading tools allow the team to save time in the long run.

 

“The simplest analogy is Photoshop for materials,” says Phail-Liff

Textile scanning is another method Ready At Dawn is employing to save time and create a more immersive world. During our visit the studio showed us a large contraption that allows developers to scan flat, real-world objects into the game. The team scans real samples of aged parchment, wallpaper, and period-accurate clothing into the game. The multiple cameras and light sources allow in-game lighting to play off these textures realistically. These samples can then be pasted onto objects and the environment.

 

“It adds a level of realism that’s just not possible otherwise,” Foster says. “There are imperfections in the world that you never think of. When you see cloth, there’s tons of little strand imperfections that are hard to mimic.”

 

Foster adds that many artists painstakingly weather and distress game objects to make them look more realistic. The textile scanner allows Ready At Dawn to simply scan the genuine article into the game, which saves artists’ time and creates a higher level of fidelity.

The process of zapping real textiles into the game saves time, but Ready At Dawn is still free to alter them if a specific pattern or look doesn’t perfectly fit the requirements. The in-game result is stunning. Everything down to the wood texture of a gun’s stock to the embroidery of a table cloth looks genuine.

 

“Every process we have that captures something from real life, we have pipeline that lets us alter it, too,” Phail-Liff says. “So we’re never wedded to exactly what we capture. It gives us all these great building blocks that it lets us stylize it, lets us change it, or alter it, but it saves a lot of time.”

 


  

Foster thinks of this method of transposing real-world textures into games could work well even for more fantastical games.

 

“I think if we were to make something stylized again, let’s say we were to make another Daxter, something in that ilk, something that’s that stylized, I think the process would be the same,” Foster says. “We would still start with a realistic base and mutate it towards our goals, because it gives you such a strong foundation to move stuff from and it’s believable. It’s immediately believable.”

 

“Not sure there any Ottsels available in this game,” Phail-Liff says.

 

“We can take a ferret and a weasel, I guess that’s what it is, man. Mix those two together – mo-cap ‘em,” Foster says, laughing.

 

Speaking of motion capture, Ready At Dawn has put a lot of effort into the character models of The Order’s knights. The team says there are more joints in one knight’s face than in all of Uncharted’s Nathan Drake, another indicator of the PS4’s prowess.

Take a look at the image above for a good sense of the range of expression these characters are capable of thanks to the increased number of joints. The improved facial capabilities allow for actor’s performances to make it into the game without losing much from the performance.

 

Ready At Dawn is taking characters a step further by paying close attention to their unique hairstyles and facial hair. Team members with hair lengths similar to the game characters were done up to look like the knights. These custom ‘dos were then carefully lit and photographed as reference for the game models. Given Galahad’s majestic mustache, it looks like the effort is paying off.

All of Ready At Dawn’s in-house tech is an impressive demonstration of the PS4’s capabilities, but as Uncle Ben said to Peter Parker, “With great power comes great responsibility.” With that in mind, Ready At Dawn is being careful not to simply add in impressive technology for the sake of doing so.

 

“As the developers our responsibility is to keep in mind the best interests of the game and making sure that we’re not gratuitously implementing technology as a digital ego trip just to show you can. It should have a purpose in terms of the emotional impact on the player, the enjoyment, [and] the experience,” Phail-Liff says.

 

“That’s something we actually have almost no interest in,” Foster says. “We’re not a tech house; we’re a gaming house. We’re game developers. Every piece of technology that’s here, no matter how crazy outlandish it is, has a reason that was directly driven by the game.”

I'm glad there's finally a thread all about The Order: 1886. This game looks visually gorgeous and sounds like a very interesting concept. Can't wait to see further developments about the game.

I'm so hyped for this game, when I pre-ordered my PS4 after E3 I put that on pre-order with it. Now to play the waiting game.

Why do they make a game displayed in letterbox format and call it 'full 1080p'? There's nothing more annoying than a game that can't even copletely fill the screen of my nice big 1080p HDTV.  'Beyond: Two Souls' on PS3 is an example of this. What's with 30 fps. when PS4 can do 60 fps?

Even though I was hoping for co-op gameplay, in a way I'm glad that they are focusing all of their efforts on an amazing single player experience.

 

Too often, single player campaigns suffer due to developent time and resources being spent on half-formed multiplayer components.
