Why i face lags in online MW2?

Hi there everyone. I am facing lags while playing any games online. My connection speed is 4mb. please tell me what to do to resolve this issue? Will this issue be solved if i buy and use a proxy server for online gaming? Or if i buy another router or dsl modem? what router do you guys recommend? i am using wired connection. Thanx in advance.
